sugarbowl cask night Experience an Alley Kat Cask Night at the Sugarbowl 6pm, Thursday, August 18 featuring the Full Nelson Moon. The folks at Alley Kat say we can expect a Sauvignon Blanc-like white wine fruitiness (gooseberry, tropical notes and grapefruit) in the flavours due to the addition of Nelson Sauvin hops to the pale ale. That’s Nelson, New Zealand, not Nelson, BC. Get there early as these nights fill up pronto. The Sugarbowl, 10922 88 Avenue, 780- 433-8369, http://thesugarbowl.org. On August 25, Alley Kat taps a cask of Chick-a-Cherry Scona (Kölsch with hand-picked Evan’s cherries) at The Common, 9910 109 Street, 780-452-7333, http://www.thecommon.ca/. |

wine of the week Alange Tempranillo (DO Ribera del Guadiana, Spain) $18 In mid-summer a wine lover’s thoughts turn to red. Here’s a good one at a great price. Not only does the Alange Tempranillo have a distinctive look, lighter-bodied Tempranillos such as Alange are wonderful wines to enjoy in the cooler temperatures of late summer. Have with grilled meats and vegetables, caponata. The red fruit flavours (plum and strawberry) pleasing silky texture, and the medium body, tannins and acidity make it your go-to vino tinto until we’re ready for the richer, heavier wines of autumn. Made by the Alvear family at their Palacio Quemado vineyard in Extremadura, close to Portugal. |
