green onion cake man is back and we’re glad
Sui To has been cooking for Edmontonians for several decades, but he’s best known for creating the green onion cake. The fried pastry layered with scallions has become Edmonton’s ubiquitous festival food. He went to Vancouver for a while; didn’t like it—too wet, too grey—and now he’s back.
You can enjoy those fried green onion cakes, hot and sour soup and a few other Northern Chinese classics along with a delicious pot of tea (his own blend) at Green Onion Cake Man restaurant (9132 118 Avenue) right beside the Paraiso Tropical Shop. Small and spare, with black and white Toti prints on the wall, it’s a comfortable spot for a casual lunch.

There are over 50 restos signed up for the annual event, offering a two-course lunch for $18; brunch for $18 and three course dinners for $30 and $45, depending on the restaurant. wine of the week: cune monopole or the crianza
I would drink that squash with either of these wines. The Monopole is savoury Viura with enough body to stand up to the cheese and tomato sauce. Or, the Crianza with its terrific acidity and great fruit. Both are in the $20 range, if not under, so, no worries about opening on a weeknight.
