Over a dozen Black-owned restaurants, food retailers and makers are participating. “We’re excited to bring this inaugural event to Edmonton during Black History Month,” says event co-organizer, Sara Awatta. “It’s a great way to remind everyone that Black-owned businesses serve delicious food, bursting with flavour—all year round.” The action starts with a Jerk Chicken pop-up on Friday, February 10 at Flava Cafe (8307 118 Avenue) from 11am-6pm (or while supplies last) with the accessible price of $5. Participating Black-owned businesses include Sauce Modern Caribbean Cuisine and Spice n’Rice, as well as the take-out spots Graham’s Jerk House and Café Caribbean. Food businesses Layered by Rissa, Token Bitters and Mojo Jojo Pickles are also part of the celebration. As is the Glass Bookshop, collaborating with Feed the Soul Dining Week to offer select titles from the Feed the Soul reading list (Black, African, and Caribbean cooking and food history) at 10 per cent off. “No matter where you’re from and where you are— stories of culture and tradition are best shared over food,” says event co-organizer, Rochelle Ignacio. “We want to showcase food-focused Black-owned businesses and highlight the positive influence the African diaspora has on our hospitality industry.” Find all the participating businesses and info here.
