undaunted
The week between Christmas and New Years is a great time to take in some culture. This AGA exhibition is a winner. Undaunted celebrates the the women who contributed to Canada’s early art history. These painters were early travellers to Canada with the Hudson’s Bay Company, Americans who emigrated to Canada for marriage as well as born-and-raised Albertans. They were also the first women to be elected into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, the first to receive an Honorary degree, the first to be represented in the National Gallery of Canada collection, and the first Canadian to win the Prix Julian from the Académie Julian in Paris, Sophie Pemberton.
Undaunted includes works from the AGA collection and loans from the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Glenbow, University of Alberta Museum Collections, Vancouver Art Gallery and Winnipeg Art Gallery. Curated by Laura Ritchie and presented by Capital Powered Art.
Undaunted: Canadian Women Painters of the 19th Century, until March 25.
