a taste of the prairies to benefit hungry kids
Enjoy the Moroccan Spiced Red Lentil soup at the Italian Centre Shop Cafes this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (while quantities last). The hearty and delicious soup, redolent with the flavours of North Africa and made with Alberta red lentils, tomato, red pepper from a recipe by Calgary’s Jamie Harling, is a joint effort between the Alberta Pulse Growers, the Italian Centre Shops and the Alberta Culinary Tourism Alliance. Proceeds from the sale of the soup benefits the Food for Thought Lunch program in Edmonton and Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids. Get it before it’s gone!
david hawksworth is the 2019 hokanson chef in residence
David Hawksworth, the chef/owner of Vancouver’s Hawksworth, Nightingale and Bel Café, is NAIT’s 11th Hokanson Chef in Residence. The annual program, made possible by a generous donation from John and Susan Hokanson, provides NAIT culinary students with the opportunity to learn firsthand from the best chefs in North America. Past chefs in res have included Susur Lee, Massimo Capra, Lynn Crawford, Michael Stadtländer, Amanda Cohen and Rod Butters. Chef Hawksworth’s career includes a decade in Michelin-starred restaurants in Europe. In 2008, he was the youngest chef to be inducted into the BC Restaurant Hall of Fame. “If I can share some ideas or talk about my experiences and that invigorates and inspires them to do great things, I’m all for that,” says chef Hawksworth. “I’m looking forward to cooking some food and having some fun.”
