We’re proud of the outpouring of support from the yegfood community for those affected by the devastation in Fort McMurray — Knifewear’s donation of all sharpening fees in May, The Pint’s free food and drink for displaced Fort McMurray residents, Three Boar’s Blindman beer offer. Check the Tomato Facebook page and Twitter feed for news on the latest fundraiser or offer to help.

If you are a member of the yegfood and drink community and are planning a fundraiser we will donate ad space and help with coordination. Email marybee@telus.net.

oyster3

Rob Tyron (Effing Rob to his friends) makes oyster fun. The former pipeliner loves to introduce people to the beauty of a fresh BC oyster. His latest event paired sweet Nanoose Bay and briny Salt Spring Island Oysters with the fine R by Ruinart Champagne at The Cavern.

In Memoriam

Chef Brad Horen died March 6 after a brief illness. Brad was a graduate of NAIT Culinary and was in the midst of a successful career — Shaw Conference Centre, Calgary’s Catch, Victoria’s Laurel Point Inn and most recently chef at the Manteo Resort in Kelowna. Brad was a leading culinary talent. He was the Canadian Chefs Federation’s Chef of the year 2007, Western Living Magazine’s 2008 Foodie of the Year, captain of the Canadian Culinary Olympic Tea and mentor to countless young cooks. Brad Horen is survived by his wife Junko; daughters Hana and Ana; his mother Barb and sister Deb.

Brendan Brewster died March 6 three months shy of his 38th birthday. Fellow bartender Tarquin Melnyk knew him well, having brought Brendan to Edmonton to work with him at the Manor Café a few years back. “Brendan was the modern incarnation of Jerry Thomas, the barman poet. He was thoughtful and articulate and sweet; he had the ability to transfer enthusiasm.” He is survived by family and a legion of colleagues, protégés and friends. Brandon Brewster once said that his greatest asset as a bartender was the ability to create regulars. That would be an asset for any human being. Brandon, we miss you.

Just sent off the top five recommendations for EnRoute’s Best New Restaurants and no, cannot say who they are. We’ll all have to wait until fall to see what their roving diner chooses as Canada’s best new restos. With all the wonderful culinary activity we’re experiencing these days let’s hope several #yeg restos make the cut. http://enroute.aircanada.com/canadas-best-new-restaurants-2015/
