at long last alta Alta (10328 Jasper Avenue, 780-244-3635, altayeg.ca) opens February 24. “I’m looking forward to having the whole thing over, the doing stuff I’ve never done before,” says chef/owner Ben Staley, referring to the delays and construction challenges that plagued the space; “and getting back to cooking.” We’re looking forward to dining there. Preservation is the cornerstone of the menu—many of the dishes are designed around the products of last summer, freeze-dried, pickled, dehydrated and salted. Open Tuesday-Saturday, 11-1am, no reservations. Its sibling next door, Alder, opens later this spring. |

a nice cuppa joe no more Sad to see that Transcend Coffee in the Mercer Building is closing February 26. Kudos to landlord Kelly Pope who thought it important to have a coffee shop in the building for the other tenants and good luck to Transcend in their new Ritchie Market location opening mid-March. |
