all is bright is this saturday!
All is Bright, the light-up festival on 124 Street, is a terrific family event, and will look even better in the snow. Visit the Indigenous Pavillion in partnership with Fort Edmonton, make maple taffy, enjoy roving performers and get a leg up on your Christmas shopping (stock up on Lake Life Caesar Mix at Heart of the Home. They are open ’til 8pm and will have Eatable Popcorn to sample.) During All is Bright, the High Street has live music by Jeff Hendrick (3:30pm-6:30pm) along with heated outdoor seating areas and a fire pit for customers to enjoy. Check it out, Saturday, November 20, 4pm-8pm.

compass chocolate: fine chocolate made right here
Leaving Fort MacMurry in the middle of a wildfire would change anyone’s life. For Priya Winsor it meant moving with her family to St. Albert and reviving a youthful dream. Now, after several years learning the ins and outs of fine chocolate (NAIT culinary, Montreal’s Chocolate Academy, apprenticeships with chocolate makers) she has created Compass Chocolates. Priya works primarily with French-made Valrhona. Her creations are velvety textured, with distinct flavours, beautifully balanced, never too sweet. The line includes seasonal bon bons, bars, baking chocolate, chocolate-covered nuts, raisins, malt balls, ornaments—there is lots to choose from. We are crazy about the chocolate covered hazelnuts. Holiday assortments start at $16.50, the Advent Box (shown) is $59.
it’s tourtière season at dine chartier
Dine Chartier’s rustic tourtière is hard to beat. Made in a classic Quebecois fashion with local meats and veg (Irving’s pork, Four Whistle Farm duck and Thundering Ground bison), it’s hearty and delicious. Keep frozen until ready to cook, then serve hot or cold (add slices to your charcuterie board or eat with a salad for lunch.) Order yours now.
eat less salt and buy 50/50 tix
It’s not just people with kidney disease who may need to eat less salt. The Kidney Community Kitchen has lots of low sodium recipes (chicken ginger congee, cauliflower pear soup, shitake broth) and several spice blend ideas to help make the transition to less salt. And, participate in yeg’s favourite type of fundraiser, a 50/50 draw! Buy tix here.
tomato top100: curry spring rolls, pho or kuy teav noodle shack
The curry beef spring rolls put Pho or Kuy Teav Noodle Shack on the Top100, but don’t stop there. Explore the entire menu. This charming north-end spot consistently delivers tasty food—the savoury soups (nothing is better in this weather than a warming bowl), the banh mie and the sublime prahok ktiss (beautifully seasoned minced pork served with crisp fresh veg rather than rice).
