Biera (9570 76 Avenue) is now open for lunch! Think salads, various handhelds on bagels, milk buns, focaccia and sourdough, and a few delicious mains like the Acme Meats bavette with fried polenta. We can’t wait to check this out, especially on that lovely patio. Open Tuesday–Friday, from 11am–2pm. Menu and reservations here.

Join guest chefs Earl Briones, Bri Campbell, and Tyson Wright at the Old Red Barn’s (25518 Township Road) Farm to Flame Dinner. The menu looks amazing, everything is cooked over an open fire, and it features early season veg from Vertical Roots Farm. Bonus: the pastoral setting in a 1930s barn overlooking Whitemud Creek cannot be beat. Six courses, with two drinks included, from 6pm- 9pm, Thursday, June 27. Tix: $175/p+.

Fire to Flame at the Old Red Barn

Our fave back-alley bakery, Sugared and Spiced (10224 82 Avenue, in the alley across from the Old Strathcona Farmers Market) is now open, Thursday to Sunday, an hour earlier and an hour later, until Labour Day. More time to pick up delicious tarts, cookies and raspberry white choc scones, available on the last weekend of every month (June 28-30). Take your chances in person, or order ahead. Or, order a six pack to bake at home. Pre-order pick-ups and deliveries will also be possible on most Wednesdays, ideal for office meetings. Check it out!

Eight creative chefs are set to compete at this fall’s Kitchen Party. The prize? A trip to the Canadian Culinary Championships in Ottawa in February. Here is the 2024 lineup: Eric Hanson, The Marc; Jason Greene, Braven; Doreen Prei, Riverview at Glenora Park; Naga Singh, Belgravia Hub; Tamara Solon, Chartier Restaurant and Mother Bakery, Beaumont; Max Straczek, Pyro Wood-Fired Grill & Kitchen; Greg Sweeney, Arbour and Joseph Vuong, Café Bicyclette. Chef Peter Keith makes a deliciously springy risotto with an easy-to-follow technique for risotto newbies. Fresh peas are not quite in the markets yet; use frozen or leave out. Guanciale is available at the Italian Centre Shops in the deli section.
