celebrate winter, art, and culture at the deep freeze festival

Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival showcases the vibrant cultures of the Alberta Avenue district, highlighting Ukrainian, French Canadian, Franco African, Indigenous (Métis, Inuit and First Nations), Latin American and Asian traditions. The theme this year is Barnyard Blitz—delight in barnyard-inspired ice sculptures, rustic lamppost displays, and interactive farm-themed activities, including a petting zoo. Enjoy a variety of traditional and fusion cuisines, deep freezer races, music and dance. Don’t miss Pipon Village to snowshoe, roast bannock over an open fire, and participate in rich generational storytelling. Saturday, January 18 from noon-10pm and Sunday, January 19, from noon-6pm. Fireworks on Saturday at 9pm. Tix, schedules and more info. Poster art by Amanda Schutz.

We are big fans of chef Peter Zukiwski (Pitt County BBQ) and his dedication to the flavours and techniques of North Carolina barbecue. Chef is having a pop-up at the Monolith Taproom (9919 78 Avenue) from 2pm on Sunday, January 19. Enjoy an array of small plates inspired by traditional southern dishes with the Monolith’s barrel-fermented beers.
