road trip!
Real Bread Alberta is organizing a road trip Saturday October 28th to Highwood Crossing https://www.highwoodcrossing.com. Tony and Penny Marshall moved back to the family farm in 1989, and started producing foodstuffs from their organic canola and grain crops in 2006. The Highwood Crossing line (flours, baking mixes and cereals, including an amazing granola and cold-pressed canola oil, staples in my pantry) is available across the country. Hit hard by the 2013 flood, the Marshalls rebuilt their production facility to continue as one of the country’s premier farm to table producers and they are, still, really nice people to boot. The trip includes tours and tastings at Highwood (including a $20 credit for purchases that day) and Sidewalk Citizen http://sidewalkcitizenbakery.com/ in Calgary, a picnic lunch by Ruby Apron, and a pit stop at Lacombe’s Blindman Brewing http://www.blindmanbrewing.com on the way home. Book by sending $50 to jensgerbitz@gmail.com. Meet in High River at Highwood at 10:45 am. Bring cash for Citizen and Blindman. Transportation is on own, though Real Bread says they will facilitate carpooling. Space is limited to 12 people, so book soon!

happy birthday taylor fladgate!
Jorge Ramos of Taylor Fladgate was in town last week to celebrate the 325 anniversary of Taylor Port with a fine port tasting, snacks and birthday cake at Woodwork. Love the new look at Woodwork, nice and loungey.
chilly? make soup
Kaelin Whittaker of the Ruby Apron Cooking School provided a terrific recipe to make tomato puree out of this season’s bumper crop. The puree provides a savoury base for pasta sauce, lasagne or soup in a jiffy. The result? A grilled cheese and tomato soup lunch is always in the picture. https://thetomato.ca/tomatoquarantwo/recipe/tomato-soup
