dalla tavola zenari has closed

We are sad to see this fun and approachable resto end its run. While we mourn, we wish only good things for owners Elisa and Ran, along with the staff and their suppliers and hope they rise again. The demise of Dalla and other independents downtown (and all over the city) is a reminder that if we don’t support our home-grown culinary treasures, we will lose them. For more info visit here. Good luck Dalla people!

strathcona spirits is down but not out

Strathcona Spirits, the plucky little distillery that could, just turned eight. Four days later it was hit by a devastating fire. One person was hurt; thankfully, they are ok. The cheeky pink building near Whyte Ave is closed for a bit—help them out by purchasing their award-winning gins, whisky or other libations here or pop by a retailer such as Bin 104, Color de Vino or Wine & Beyond.

recipe of the week: chef brad smoliak’s alberta minestrone

This easy and warming soup is a great way to start the year—to help us segue into eating that is less rich, healthy, yet still tasty and luxurious. It’s also an excellent way to clear out the fridge after a week or two of (perhaps) excess. Infinitely variable: don’t like beans? Use lentils. No bacon, cabbage or zucchini? It’s out of season anyway. Use what you do have, some sausage, bits of fennel, some pasta, more carrot, the kale, the chard. It will be delicious either way
