sunworks turkeys for the holidays

Sunworks is now taking order for their fresh, certified organic, BCSPCA certified humane heirloom Orlopp Bronze turkeys. A whole turkey too big for the smaller celebrations we will be having this year? Reserve a fresh turkey breast or thigh instead. Order online: sunworksfarm.com; call 1-877-393-3133, pop by the Sunworks stand in the Old Strathcona Market or visit the Sunworks store within Blush Lane (8135 102 Street). The order deadline is December 20 or when they sell out, whichever comes first. Pickup is at the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market on Wednesday, December 23, 8am-3pm, or from 4pm-9pm if you are picking up in Blush Lane. Keep in mind that reserving a turkey guarantees a turkey but not a specific size. Pick up early for the best selection.

on trend: amari caldo

’Tis the season for hot drinks and one of the hottest trends is amari caldo (hot amari). Amari are the Italian aromatized wines drunk after dinner to aid digestion. We can thank Daniel Costa at Corso 32 who introduced us to the whole concept. He was the first to encourage drinking Amari and stocks dozens. Cibo Bistro has a good selection too. To buy for home, check out the selection at Color de Vino. Use three parts amaro to five parts hot water, with a citrus twist. Easy peasy. Every region has its own style—Nonino with its citrusy flavours would be delicious, Montenegro is easy to find, but the best for hot drinks may be the less-known Alpine amari such as Braulio, with notes of pine and juniper. It’s like you are drinking the forest—how wonderful after a walk in the woods. Or, try Antica Serravalle, made in Piedmont. For more on amari: thetomato.ca.
