ramen lovers unite at metro cinema to view come back anytime

Self-taught ramen master Masamoto Ueda and his wife Kazuko have run their Tokyo ramen shop, Bizentei for more than 40 years, building a community with their devoted customers. The friends venture out on weekends, across the Japanese countryside, to harvest pears, bamboo shoots and wild mountain yams. The doc Come Back Anytime is a story about the ramen, the Bizentei community and what happens next. See it at 1pm, Sunday, August 7 at Metro Cinema (8712 109 Street). The screening features an intro by Kasey Ramen’s Allen Gao, creator of Edmonton ramen pop-ups and take-home kits. For an extra delicious experience, come early to score tix for the next Kasey Ramen pop-up on August 14/15.

canteen is closing

Frank and Andrea Olson just announced that they are closing the wonderful Canteen (10522-124 Street, 780-485-6125, canteenyeg.ca). These superb restaurateurs cared for us for 25 years at the Red Ox Inn and another ten at Canteen. We’re happy to report that Canteen is open until September 18 AND the Olson’s are opening a new spot in Crestwood in 2023. Make a reso here.

recipe of the week: stone fruit slaw

This recipe is an easy way to enjoy the stone fruit you bought at the market, especially the not quite ripe peaches and nectarines, when you get tired of eating peaches over the sink. (That never happens, the season is so short, but think of this as a more civilized way to eat the stone fruit bounty.) Delicious as is, add burrata and a squeeze of lemon juice to up the ante.
