For two decades The Tomato food & drink has explored Edmonton’s food culture — our chefs, home cooks, farmers, food producers and restaurants. Regardless of trends and new developments, one thing remains the same— the kitchen is still the heart of the home.

Submissions Deadline midnight June 3, 2022
Winners will be featured in the July/August issue of The Tomato and online at thetomato.ca and in all press releases and materials related to the TKDA.

The Tomato Kitchen Design Awards (TKDA)

Designers, architects, builders, developers, individuals, restaurant owners, institutions, families and contractors are invited to submit their completed kitchen designs in several categories, along with special awards for the green, tech-savvy, and outdoor kitchen for the inaugural Tomato Kitchen Design Awards (TKDA).

Proud of the kitchen you did yourself? We want to see it! The DIY category is for the home handyman/woman non-professional.

Guidelines

  • Entries must be submitted and received via the online entry system by 12 midnight MST by June 3, 2022.
  • All images must be jpg format, minimum 300dpi resolution and no larger than 8.5 x 11 print size.
  • Project descriptions and images must NOT contain the name or logo of the designer, architect, firm, company, client or manufacturer.
  • Only finalists will be contacted and will be required to send plans as part of the final judging criteria

Eligibility

  • Architects and designers, architectural firms, design firms, builders, developers, clients and manufacturers.
  • The DIY category is open to non-professionals only.
  • Projects must be completed by December 31, 2021.

Judging Criteria

Winners will need to be more than pretty. We are looking for kitchens that work — highly functional spaces that utilize every square inch, creating a functional cooking machine. We are also looking for design and construction that moves the conversation forward — towards a more design and environmentally conscious world.

  • Is the design visually and intellectually stimulating?
  • Are the materials used sustainable, found, recyclable or recycled?
  • Does the design help the user become more environmentally conscious?
  • Is the design attractive, witty and delightful?

The judges are paying special attention to:

  • The Green Kitchen: The best use of sustainable technologies, materials and finishes.
  • The Techno-Phobe Kitchen: The stripped-down elemental kitchen; think one good knife and a hibachi.
  • Tech-Savvy Kitchen: All the newest bells and whistles.
  • The Outdoor Kitchen: Does your back yard celebrate cooking and entertaining outdoors?
