Geoscapes Events creates special dining moments until April 11 with chefs Mark Kalynchuk, Shaun Hicks, Edgar Gutierrez, Ariel Del Rosario and Roel Canafranca, Lindsay Porter, Paul Shufelt and Shane Chartrand. Meuwly’s is known for their smoked ham (TomatoTop100) and Easter is a good time to indulge. The hams (whole muscle, free range pork from Bear & Flower Farms) are honey brined and beechwood smoked. It comes fully cooked—all you need to do is heat it up. Each order comes with Meuwly’s signature mustard too. The small (approx. 1.2 kg) feeds 2-3 people; the large (approx. 3.5 kg), feeds 8-10). tulips are the harbinger of spring

“Tulipmania celebrates the craziness of the tulip’s history,” says Miranda Ringma, Zocalo. “Full of colour, crazy tulip decor, funky tulip arrangements and lots and lots of tulips.” Thousands of tulips arrive at Zocalo (10825 95 Street, 780-428-0754, zocalo.ca) for the celebration. the wine world loses one of its best

Steven Spurrier was one of wine’s most visible characters—the Englishman who moved to France, opened a wine shop (and a wine school) and created the 1976 Judgement of Paris (Alan Rickman played him in the movie Bottle Shock). He was chair of the Decanter World Wine Awards and one of the first to make English sparkling wine at his Dorset estate, Bride Valley. And he started the Academie du Vin Library with Simon McMurtrie in 2019 to publish the best wine writing from past and present. I met Steven Spurrier briefly at a wine event a decade or so ago— he was disarming, funny and generous with his knowledge. This gracious man was a giant among wine people. He was 79.

formosa bistro says enough

Formoso Bistro announced yesterday on Instagram that they were closing, for good. A small spot tucked away in a 34 Avenue strip mall, hard to find maybe, yet Formosa had great food. It was worth the trip. The cold sesame salad, so refreshing on a hot day, the amazing popcorn chicken, the Taiwanese beef noodle and the braised pork belly on rice. Or the sweet potato fries dusted with a salty plum seasoning—so delicious. Couple that with a supreme whiskey cocktail and owner Yu-chen Lee’s chatty hospitality and you had dining gold. A victim of Covid 19. When is this going to stop? When will restaurants get the support they need to survive until they can get back to full capacity?
