Talking Turkey

If you want a nice, fresh locally-raised turkey for Thanksgiving (and yes it’s worth it — they taste great, the yield is very good and the bones make beautiful soup) you must order now.

Jerry Kitt, First Nature Farms : “The scoop on turkeys? This is my 20th year raising turkeys and it’s been my best year ever, low mortality and very laid back, contented birds. The turkeys will be available fresh for two occasions, Thanksgiving and Christmas. This year most of my birds are hens. I will have them fresh, fresh, fresh at the Old Strathcona Farmers Market for anyone who would like to order in advance. Prices are the same as they’ve been for years, $4.50 per pound. Thanksgiving birds should average around 17 pounds and Christmas birds around 24. I will also have some 30-40 pounders available for Christmas. If that sounds large then you may not want to hear about our super-sized ‘birds of celebration’ of which we have only two left. They will weigh in the 40 to 60 pound range and definitely will not fit in your average oven.

“All of our turkeys are pasture-raised, certified organic and also SPCA certified too.
