Things to do in Lake Louise

Hire a Guide
There are many trails you can get to easily by yourself, but the guide’s knowledge of the terrain and the history of the area makes this worthwhile even for experienced hikers. Winter or summer, they will get you into the back country, even lend you some poles. These experienced individuals love the mountains and will always set you straight. Our guide, Mike Vincent, was funny, knowledgeable and gave us so many tips on where to go and why. And his bear knowledge is considerable In the winter, consider a night owl snowshoe or hike the ice falls at Johnston Canyon (they supply the transportation and the cleats).

Rent a canoe or a bike.
A popular activity, at one point I saw 27 canoes on the lake. But, it’s a fairly big lake and the breeze is fresh on a hot day. In the winter you can rent skates and practice your spins and jumps on the well-maintained ice surface near the hotel.

The Tramline Trail
This path follows the old tramline path then joins up with the road a bit before the Chateau. It’s a lovely way to get into the village to visit the wonderful Parks Canada Visitor Centre or to go to Laggan’s Bakery. Expect joggers and cyclists, cross-country skiers in the winter.

Have a Caesar at the Deer Lodge.
A well-made drink.
