Mulled Wine

500 ml pomegranate juice
25 g light brown sugar
handful frozen blackberries
250 ml apple juice
1 stick cinnamon
1 star anise
4 cloves
3 black peppercorns
1 orange, quartered
1 T balsamic vinegar, or to taste (optional)

Put all ingredients but the vinegar into a saucepan. Heat gently until simmering. Add balsamic if using, taste for sweetness, then strain into heatproof glasses.
Serves 3-4.
